Rank Tracking With Static Residential Proxies

· 2 min read

Tracking keyword rankings yourself means running searches on a schedule and recording where your pages turn up. Because search engines personalise results by location and keep a tight rein on automated queries, the IP you search from determines both how accurate the data is and how long the tracker keeps working.

What the IP affects

  • Location. Results depend on where the search engine believes you to be, which it infers from your IP before anything else. A proxy in Ashburn, Virginia is shown what a searcher in Northern Virginia is shown.
  • Network type. Searches coming from hosting IPs run into CAPTCHAs in short order, whereas those coming from consumer ISPs are treated as people.
  • Consistency. Should the exit location shift between checks, a change in ranking becomes impossible to tell apart from a change in location.

A static residential proxy takes care of all three, being a consumer ISP address in a known place that stays put.

Sizing a pool

A person runs a few dozen searches a day. Keeping each IP to the low hundreds per day, spread out over the day, and adding IPs as the keyword list grows is a sensible way to plan.

Depth is what drives the request count. Since September 2025 Google returns ten results per page and no longer honours the old num=100 parameter, so the top 20 costs two requests per keyword and the top 100 costs ten. Most teams settle on tracking the top 20 daily and going deeper once a week, for a handful of keywords only.

  • Vary the delay between searches.
  • Keep cookies per IP.
  • Rest an IP for the remainder of the day once it meets a CAPTCHA.
  • Use separate IPs for desktop and mobile checks.

When to use something else

  • Many cities or countries. That requires IPs in those places, which a fixed pool in a single location cannot provide.
  • Tens of thousands of keywords. A SERP API or a rotating network is more practical at that size. See static vs rotating vs datacenter proxies.
  • Your own site only. Google Search Console already reports your average positions at no cost.

Where it fits

Agencies and in-house teams tracking anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand US keywords, who want daily data of their own without paying per query. In practice that means a few dozen static IPs and a scheduler.
